Hoysala Architecture

Hoyasala style is the highest architectural achievement in the development of Indian temple architecture. A team involved in materializing this unique venture had undertaken an in-depth study on the selected Hoyasala temples namely Isvara Temple(Arasikere), Amrteshvara Temple(Amrutapura), Narasimha Temple (Arakere), Veeranarayana Temple(Belavadi), Lakshmi Narayana Temple (Javagal), Lakshmi Narayana Temple (Hosaholalu), Chennakeshava Temple Complex (Belur), Hoyasaleshwara and Kedareshwara Temple (Halebidu) and Keshava Temple (Somanathpura). Each of these Temples are unique in its characterstic features, with elegant sculptures, structural embellishment, artistic pillar types and ceilings, carved reliquaries and multitude of thematic sculptures.

The great temples of the Hoyasala period are masterpieces of this unique style, standing testimony to  the glory of our culture and they are regarded as 'Jewels Of Indian Architecture'. 

Salient features of the Hoyasala style of architecture are:

  • Primarily created in soap stone
  • 16 or 32 pointed start-shaped ground plan
  • Sharp cuts from base to shikara
  • Shrines are ekakuta and the central portion of the temple wall is highly decorative
  • The open mantapa which serves the purpose of an outer hall(outer mantapa) is a regular feature in larger Hoyasala temples leading to an inner small closed mantapa and the shrine(s)
  • Artistically carved with toranas, figurines and crisp mouldings in term of scale and proportion
  • Decorative bands consisting of animals, scrolls, narrative sculptures make the basement very artistic and interesting
  • Display complexity in executing sculptures on the central portion of the wall
  • The entire style is highly decorative and exuberant
  • The shrines are composed in --one, three or five kuta system
  • Navaranga, the interiorpillared hall is ornate with polished pillars and embellished niches
  • The ceilings are skillfully designed with geometrical scheme with interesting set of patterns
  • Bracket figures are one of the classic features of Hoyasala style
  • Provision is made for running of the rain water
